Shabana Rahman appointed as Principal of Horizon Elementary School!

Shabana held the role of acting principal where she had to go above and beyond the call of duty to support her community during the Fort McMurray fires. Shabana helped reunite displaced students who were separated during the fires with their parents. She is an action-oriented leader whose words and actions combined with her integrity will be a fantastic addition to Horizon Elementary. Shabana joins us from Fort McMurray where she is the Vice-Principal of the Islamic School since 2014. “I firmly believe that the children entrusted to me are the future of tomorrow, and it is our role as educators and administrators to invest, inspire, assist, and mentor students to strive for excellence.” - Shabana Rahman Shabana earned her Master of Education in Curriculum at Avondale University in New Castle, Australia (December 2005). She then received her Professional Teaching Certificate in 2009, and Bachelor of Education from the Pacific Adventist University, and a Diploma in Primary Education at Fuilton College, Fiji. She has an extensive teaching experience that includes 4 years in Fiji (2001-2004). Upon moving to Canada in 2005, Shabana worked as a teacher and principal at the Surrey Muslim School (2006-2012) in Surrey, BC. She joined the Fort McMurray Public School District in 2012 as a teacher and very quickly joined the leadership team. She is an award-winning TAFI recipient (Twitter, Apps, Facebook, and Instagram award - 2015). This award was instrumental in promoting communication and awareness of fundamental learning taking place in Fort McMurray Public School classrooms.

Throughout her 16-year career as an administrator and elementary teacher, she has grown to become an inspiring leader who loves guiding students and motivating her staff.

She looks forward to working with the experienced staff of educational professionals at Horizon Elementary. Shabana was married in 2003 to Ali Nawaz and they are celebrating their 14th anniversary this summer. They have two children; Juveria 12 and Adnan 10, and a family pet, a cat named Milo. In her spare time, Shabana enjoys walking, reading, gardening, and travelling. She has a welcoming personality and treats everyone like family, building lifelong relationships with colleagues, friends, parents and students.

Shabana is looking forward to moving to Calgary to help kick-start Horizon Elementary in its inaugural year as its principal.
